The Marked (formerly known as Coat of Eyes) was a Chicago-based gothic rock band that formed in 1985. The band name came from Ron and Billy’s birthmarks (Billy’s port-wine stain can be seen on his left arm and hand). After playing a few gigs, The Marked moved down to Florida in hopes of obtaining a larger fan base. In 1986, Dale left the band and was replaced by Len Ayala.
After Len quit the band in 1987, the Marked broke up about twenty gigs later after having moved back to Chicago. Soon after, Billy met James Iha. Along with Ron Roesing, they formed a band under a new name: The Smashing Pumpkins.
